Overview
The City of Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is seeking a Food Service Assistant for the West Neck ICF (Intermediate Care Facility) within the Developmental Services Division. The selected candidate must possess a Food Service Certification License and have one (1) or more years of experience working in a residential setting with basic food preparation and cooking.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and serve meals to meet the health and nutritional requirements of residents.
- Ensure health and safety standards related to food storage, preparation, and clean-up are met (including dishwashing and floor maintenance).
- Collaborate with Registered Dietitian and nursing staff to plan menus that comply with daily nutritional requirements and physician’s orders.
- Maintain food inventory to ensure ingredients are available for planned meals.
- Assist in recordkeeping to meet policies and procedures necessary for reimbursement.
- Work closely with the second cook and food service delivery company.
- Ensure menu substitutions meet daily nutritional requirements and are documented.
- Adhere to Health Department sanitary inspections and relevant licensure standards.
- Maintain records and submit reports as required.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Three (3) years of experience in food service, such as bulk cooking in schools, restaurants, nursing homes, hospitals, or institutions.
- OR any equivalent combination of education and experience in food service-related fields.
- TB test required.
Special Requirements:
- Must be able to work hours beyond scheduled shifts during City-wide emergencies.
- Alpha I Position: Employees in this designation are considered essential personnel.
Skills & Preferences
Preferred Experience:
- One (1) or more years working in a residential setting.
- Experience with basic food preparation and cooking.
- Knowledge of kitchen sanitation and health procedures.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Food Service Management Certification or equivalent.
- Experience preparing and cooking special diets.
