Overview
The City of Virginia Beach is seeking three Construction Inspectors to join the Permits & Inspections division of the Planning & Community Development Department. These positions will ensure compliance with City and State construction regulations and standards in various projects, including highways, drainage systems, and utilities within city right-of-way areas.
Responsibilities
- Review engineering construction plans and specifications.
- Inspect construction and repair of highways, drainage facilities, and utilities.
- Ensure proper construction methods and materials comply with regulations.
- Coordinate with City agencies, contractors, and developers.
- Conduct inspections of highways, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and drainage systems.
- Inspect and ensure compliance with Erosion & Sedimentation (E&S) and Stormwater management regulations.
- Maintain records and update reports in the Accela Permitting System.
- Meet with contractors and property owners for pre-construction meetings.
- Respond to complaints related to new construction, utilities, and right-of-way issues.
- Inspect installation and removal of underground and above-ground storage tanks.
- Obtain required certifications within the specified time frame:
- Erosion and Sedimentation (E&S) Certification – Within one year of hire.
- Stormwater Certification – Within 18 months of hire.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Construction Inspector I:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of progressive experience in construction inspection or a related field.
- Must obtain a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license.
- Ability to work extra hours as needed for City-wide emergencies.
Construction Inspector II:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Five (5) years of progressive experience in construction inspection or a related field OR an equivalent combination of experience and technical training.
- Must obtain a valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license.
Skills & Preferences
Preferred Experience:
- Knowledge of site development and construction regulations.
- Experience providing customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Professional Certifications:
- Erosion & Sedimentation (E&S) Certification
- Stormwater Management Certification
- VDOT Inspections Certification
- Proficiency with Accela or similar permitting/inspection software.
- Experience in stormwater management and construction site inspections.
